Avoid Getting Sick When You Work in the Heat

Gradually build up amount of time spent working in the heat.
Wear a hat and sunscreen outdoors.
Drink water steadily before and during working in the heat.
Avoid hot foods and drinks that contain alcohol or caffeine.
Don't overexert yourself; work at a steady pace.
Take regular breaks in a cool place.
Wear light, loose clothing - but not so loose that it could get caught in machinery!
Heat fatigue (weakness; fatigue):
Drink water.
Take a break away from the heat.
See a doctor if symptoms persist.
Heat exhaustion (weakness; dizziness; sweating; moist, clammy skin; pale or flushed appearance, nausea):
Move to a cool place.
Loosen clothes and apply cool compresses.
Drink water slowly.
Elevate feet 8 to 12 inches.
Heatstroke (lack of sweating; high body temperature; dry, hot reddish skin; chills; strong, rapid pulse; confusion):
Treat as a medical emergency.
Call for emergency assistance immediately.
Move a heatstroke victim to a cool area immediately.
Use cool water to soak the person's clothes and body.
Fan the body.
Monitor breathing.
Give fluids only if the person is conscious. Never give fluids to an unconscious person!
